Inspiration Monday: Look Fear in the Eye

Only when we are no longer afraid do we begin to live.
- Dorothy Thompson

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.
- Eleanor Roosevelt

Be not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living, and your belief will help create the fact.

Writing fears.

Oh, yeah.  I've got them.  Especially now that I'm working on what I hope is the final revision on PB, my YA historical novel.

One of my critique buddies, PJ Hoover (who by the way has an entertaining MG novel both boys and girls are going to enjoy, THE EMERALD TABLET) wrote in the comments of Becky's post, "I’m laughing because I never voice my fears. Maybe that’s my fear: to voice my fears and give them life."

I loved that.

No need to give this thing more life than it needs.

Sure, it's okay to have self-doubt, to question, to worry.  But to let it consume you to the point where you freeze and let your dreams fizzle...that is not right.

You are good enough!

You are smart enough!

You have a fantastic idea!

You can do it!

I know you can!

And, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Throw out those negative thoughts that slow you down.  No need to have that in your way.

Instead, show yourself what you are capable of.

Prove to yourself that you can.

Will you let the fear in and dominate your whole existence or will you totally kick it to the curb? Are you going to follow your dream? Or will you always wonder?

You decide.

Now get to work.

I just sent your well-chosen quotes to my son. Thank you for the inspiration.

It's amazing how easily fear controls us. I'm struggling constantly with that battle in my writing. I pretty much control fear in other parts of my life but not my writing. Still, I'm working on it... and that's a start.

I'm glad you liked these quotes.

Here's to the steps forward so we can believe in our work! Best of luck.

Hey Vivian! Thanks for putting up my thoughts on fear! It's a great reminder always for me.

I try to uphold a "feel the fear and do it anyway" philosophy. If something scares me, that's even more reason I should do it.

In the middle of my own novel, this is exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks for the post of inspiration! And good luck with your writing!
